New York Design Awards

New York is one of the few cities in the world that not only consumes design but also does a damn good job at inspiring design; whether that design be a Kodak camera or a humble mop bucket**

Inspiration is seen on every corner you turn walking along the Big Apple streets. design100 is proud to extend its international design awards programs to New York. This year our unique set of programs will be displaying excellence and creativity on three continents.

New York is the first city to be chosen in North America and it will launch the New York Design Awards. Like all the design100 awards programs it will celebrate creativity, courage and innovation in design. Uniquely we look at design from both the creator and commissioner. The awards provide a unique opportunity for all sectors of the industry to participate across an extensive range of categories and achieve marketplace recognition.

Over the last few years we have developed a thriving community of design professionals and people in the market place who consume and commission a large percentage of the work entered.

About the Awards

Mission Statement

design100 exists to grow design demand. We celebrate the courage of those who commission, create and consume design. We celebrate those who create and underpin demand for design. We do this so our society can leverage the most effective, proven and understood method to accelerate transformation – design. Our focus is applied design – the place where economics and creative industries intersect. We do this through encouraging involvement by those connected to the design economy. Want to get involved, want to join our community…

design100 provide a platform of award programs across three continents. They have been created to celebrate that most elusive, yet essential ingredient that lift our daily labours above the everyday.

That ingredient is courage; courage to seek further, aim higher, work harder.

Every design100 award program acknowledges that we live in a marketplace where the quality of our design choices should be a mix of sound, commercial understanding and courageous, relevant design.

It’s why we equally acknowledge and award the important role played by both the creator and the person who commissioned the project. Neither can exist without the other.

We celebrate their work and partnerships, opening communication between designers and the marketplace and help provide thought leadership on how design will shape the future.

design100 is a social enterprise, with 20% of programs’ profits returned to the industry through a series of grants that assist in the promotion of design.

** One might poo poo the idea of considering the design of the humble mop bucket, but that would be ignoring the design requirements that go into creating a commercial product. Industrial designers need to pay attention to designing working parts for manufacture, as opposed to just designing for a visual, or a works-like model. In addition a designer needs to determine which materials to select for a specific environments as well as to consider price points. There are actual finite element analysis specialists at large manufactures such as Rubbermaid, who computationally analyze the parts of a new product for durability. In addition they have teams of creative engineers and industrial designers who use their fresh perspective to see potential problems and solutions. There are actually a number of Rubbermaid mop bucket products. You have the simple Rubbermaid buckets with various shapes that have a handle and a spout which work just fine for simple every day bucket needs.. However there are also Rubbermaid professional plus mop buckets with a wringer. This one piece, compact design with integrated mop bucket and wringer has a reverse wringing mechanism making it more comfortable to use. Plus, it has built in handles on the bottom of the bucket to make lifting and emptying easier. When you look for the 5 best mop buckets, Rubbermaid is right up there at #2. Their commercial buckets are not cheap, but are easily available on line at a number of sites. My uncle works at CleanItSupply, an online janitorial supplies store that sells to both wholesale and retail customers and the bulk mop and bucket combo is a great deal. I was astounded at the number of Rubbermaid products that this e commerce site offers. I happened to purchase a Rubbermaid 7780 WaveBrake mopping trolley for my restaurant. Let me just say, after all the wows from my clean up crew, I realized that this extraordinary mop bucket is an engineering feat and definitely should win a design award.
